PROJECT: Wheat Street Pedestrian Bridge

LOCATION: Columbia, South Carolina

ENGINEER: Chao & Associates

YEAR: 2022 - Present

The University of South Carolina is currently constructing a major project for added residences on campus for their students. The desire was to create a fully ADA accessible campus between this new project and the main campus. A crucial link to that was a new pedestrian bridge over Wheat Street. The 120' long bridge will be a custom designed steel truss that creates a seamless connection with the other crossings on campus. The verticals are meant to catch the attention and resemble a Vierendeel truss while the diagonals with their smaller profile seem to disappear in the background. The team is going through multiple design review boards and participates in biweekly progress meetings with the university. Maxim is currently the bridge architect on the project and responsible for all aesthetic elements including the materials, texture, pier types and shapes as well as the aesthetic lighting.
