PROJECT: Holešovice-Karlín Footbridge Competition

LOCATION: Prague, Czech Republic

ROLE: Bridge Architect

ENGINEER: FINLEY International

YEAR: 2017

The sweeping arches of the bridge gracefully skip across the Vltava River like a stone cast by hand. Fluid and sinuous the arches dance from side to side as they cross the river, creating a design that is both dynamic and responsive to the asymmetrical nature of the site. The concept for the bridge is derived from the language of its surroundings creating a design that is beautiful from all vantage points along the river, shore, and on the bridge.

Arches were selected as the primary structure for the bridge because of their natural strength and beauty along with the historical significance that they have in the city of Prague. Arch bridges stitch the two shores of the Vltava at many points along the river. This new pedestrian bridge is an ode to those bridges and the history of the city but it utilizes a contemporary design and modern materials to inspire and meet the demands of the Praha population and the future link it will provide.
